Duration

Intakes are 17 weeks long.

  • Full time study = 60 credits per intake; requiring approximately 40 hours study per week.  The whole course could be completed in 2 (alternate) intakes.
  • It is recommended that students select alternate intakes  – ie select papers for intakes  #1 + #3   OR   #2 and #4 to avoid date overlaps.
  • Part time study may be completed over several intakes by selecting fewer modules per intake.
  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake and cannot be carried over to another intake.

Course Outline

The National Diploma in Project Management (Level 5) recognises the skills and knowledge of a project manager. People awarded this qualification will have demonstrated that they have taken responsibility for managing projects, including managing the work of others within a project team. Level 5 is for project managers who are working on a project in an organisation.The qualification structure recognises the diversity of contexts to which project management competencies are applied. The final assignment will require evidence students are managing a project across all the disciplines.

Part time study is recommended due to the intensive workload.

Course Content

US 25219 - Manage projects

Unit covers the management of a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. It focuses on the application of project management skills and the requirement of meeting timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project. Students will be able to define a project, develop a project plan, administer and monitor a project, finalise a project and review a project.

 

US 25221 - Manage application of project integrative processes

At the completion of this unit, students will be able to manage integration of all functions of project management, coordinate internal and external environments and implement project activities throughout project life cycle. A project manager usually performs the specialist functions required by this unit standard.

 

US 25222 - Manage project scope

People credited with this unit standard are able to conduct project authorisation activities, conduct project scope definition activities and manage application of scope controls for projects. A project manager usually performs the specialist functions required by this unit standard.

 

US 25223 - Manage project time

Students will be able to determine and implement project schedule and assess time management outcomes for projects at the completion of this unit. A project manager usually performs the specialist functions required by this unit standard.

 

US 25224 - Manage project costs

At the completion of this unit students will be able to determine project costs, monitor and control project costs and conduct financial completion activities for projects. A project manager usually performs the specialist functions required by this unit standard.

 

US 25225 - Manage project quality

Successful completion of this unit will mean that students are able to determine quality requirements, implement quality assurance and implement project quality improvements for projects. A project manager usually performs the specialist functions required by this unit standard.

 

US 25226 - Manage project human resources

People credited with this unit standard are able to implement human resource and stakeholder planning activities for projects, implement staff training and development for project team members and manage the project team and stakeholders. A project manager usually performs the specialist functions required by this unit standard.

 

US 11649 - Manage and coordinate business meetings to achieve outcomes

Students will be able to establish meeting objectives, identify and inform participants, conduct meetings to achieve objectives and record and report meeting outcomes and determine follow-up actions.

 

US 9692 - Present information orally to an audience

People credited with this unit are able to gather material for an oral presentation and structure and deliver an oral presentation to an audience.

 

US 9685 - Write an analytical report

People credited with this unit standard are able to select and organise information, write introductory section(s), body and summary of the report and produce the report according to specified standard format.

 

US 8498 - Demonstrate and apply knowledge of managing conflict in the workplace

Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of conflict, monitor conflict situations and develop and apply strategies to address conflict situations in the workplace at the completion of this unit.

 

US 9691 - Demonstrate knowledge of group processes

People credited with this unit standard are able to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of working in groups, explain group processes and their effect on group function and outline strategies to manage conflict in a group.

 

US 9678 - Conduct formal meetings

Students will be able to prepare for and chair a formal meeting and manage post meeting follow-up at the completion of this unit.

 

US 19025 - Demonstrate and apply knowledge of quality assurance in a business operation

People credited with this unit are able to explain concepts, systems and principles of quality and quality assurance, identify the quality assurance requirements for a business operation and assess the quality assurance system of a business operation.

 

US 1986 - Apply calculations, data analysis and statistical interpretation in a business context

At the completion of this unit students will be able to complete calculations for a business operation, compile, measure and analyse business data and present and interpret business statistics for the analysed data.

 

US 23396 - Demonstrate knowledge of performance management planning

People credited with this standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the role of performance management in an organisation and develop a performance management plan.

Additional Information

Enrolment: Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

  

Transfers:  All study selected for a particular intake must be completed within that intake period and cannot be carried over to another intake, unless a transfer is requested within the first two weeks after the start date.  Each transfer requested into an alternative intake will incur an admin fee of $50.  Transfers are not permitted two weeks after the intake start date or between academic years.

 

Withdrawals:  In order to get a refund of fees, students must advise SIT2LRN of their application withdrawal, in writing, 14 days prior to programme start date.  Students can withdraw up to 75% of the way through the course, but will still be liable for the fees. Students must advise SIT2LRN in writing of their programme withdrawal.

 

This programme requires a computer and internet access. All students are required to use their SIT webmail only. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system, for which access will be given during the period of study.

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not completed this enrolment process or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fee Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may wish to continue onto further study in the Diploma in Project Management (Level 6).

Application Criteria

  • All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in project management and have academic attributes which indicate that they have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme
  • Applicants should be a minimum of 20 years of age, with a minimum of 4 years secondary education
  • School leavers should have attained a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at level 2 in each of 4 subjects.
  • Mature students are welcome to apply
  • Prior completion of the National Certificate in Project Management (Level 4) is recommended.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed the programme and be eligible for the award of the qualification National Diploma in Project Management (Level 5) they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved 120 credits as specified in the programme schedule.

 

The National Diploma will be awarded directly by NZQA on attainment of 120 credits as specified and upon verification of the graduate's NZQA official record of learning.
