Duration

Intakes are 17 weeks long.

  • Full time study = 60 credits per intake; requiring approximately 40 hours study per week.  The entire 8 modules could be completed over 2 full-time intakes (34 weeks).
  • It is recommended that students select alternate intakes  – ie select papers for intakes  #1 + #3   OR   #2 and #4 to avoid date overlaps.
  • Part time study may be completed over several intakes by selecting fewer modules per intake.
  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake and cannot be carried over to another intake.

Course Outline

This programme aims to provide students with the advanced business knowledge skills, and competence required for business operations, including planning, coordinating, supervisory and other business related roles.  On achieving this qualification students will have the skills, knowledge and competence required to undertake a range of high level business activities and carry out a mix of specialised operations involving a degree of self directed work and supervision of processes and people.  This diploma will build on your knowledge from the National Diploma in Business Level 5.

Course Content

IMPORTANT NOTE: Many assignments for NDBL6 require application/experience in a workplace.  It is not possible to complete some assignments without this practical experience. Workplace assessment requires written confirmation on letterhead.

 

US1993 – Manage small business operations (Level 6, 5 credits)

This unit standard is for people who own or, seek to own, or participate in the management of small business operations. People credited with this unit standard are able to: assess location and layout of physical facilities; plan and control production of goods and/or services; assess staffing needs; manage merchandising; and formulate and implement marketing strategies

 

US2930 – Develop and coordinate marketing strategies (Level 6, 10 credits)

This unit standard is for people who have or seek responsibility for, or provide advice for, developing the strategic direction and scope of marketing activities. People credited with this unit standard are able to analyse and assess marketing performance and current strategic position, and develop and evaluate strategic alternatives to meet specific marketing objectives. They are also able to select marketing strategies and produce strategic marketing plans that meet organisational and marketing objectives.

  

US6412 – Investigate and evaluate small business franchising options (Level 6, 10 credits)

This unit standard is relevant for evaluation of franchising as an option for small business operations, and for providing advice for prospective franchisers and franchisees. People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify the core elements of business franchise ventures; determine the essential requirements for establishing franchise business operations; and evaluate franchise proposals. 

  

US7448 – Review and report on organisational performance against operational plans and objectives (Level 6, 10 credits)

People credited with this standard are able to review organisational performance against operational plans and objectives, and to report on organisational performance.

 

US7455 – Develop and strengthen customer relationships and services (Level 6, 10 credits)

This unit standard is for people who have or seek responsibility for managing customer services. People credited with this unit standard are able to develop, implement and review customer service standards, monitor and review customer services against standards, and build customer relationships.

   

US8084 – Audit quality management systems for compliance with quality standards (Level 6, 14 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare to carry out a quality audit; carry out technical aspects of a quality audit; carry out interpersonal aspects of a quality audit; report on a quality audit; and verify corrective actions.

  

US9741 – Demonstrate knowledge of change management (Level 6, 10 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe current schools of thought that contribute to change management in organisations; demonstrate knowledge of managing the change process; and demonstrate knowledge of change processes and methods.

 

US11624 – Demonstrate and apply knowledge of financial analysis (Level 5, 10 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the objectives and limitations of analysis of financial statements; calculate ratios to measure profitability, asset utilisation, working capital management, long-term financial stability, and financial markets; report to management on the results of financial analysis; and demonstrate and apply knowledge of the solvency test.

  

US19020 – Develop performance standards and monitor performance for a logistics operation (Level 5, 6 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able, in a logistics context, to: demonstrate knowledge of performance measurement; establish performance standards and monitoring systems for a logistics operation within the context of an organisation's business plan; and apply the monitoring systems.

 

US11633 – Apply the law of contract to a given fact situation (Level 5, 10 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: define a contract; apply the law relating to the formation of a contract; apply the law which may invalidate a contract or render it unenforceable; apply the law of discharge of contract; and describe the remedies available for a breach of contract.

 

US23912 – Conduct an environmental analysis for an organisation (Level 6, 10 credits)

People credited with this standard are able to conduct an environmental analysis for an organisation.

 

US25778 Manage risk in an organisation (Level 6, 10 credits)

People credited with this standard are able to: identify context to be taken into account when managing risk; develop a risk management framework in an organisation; assess risks in an organisation; and identify options for the treatment of risks, and monitor treatments. This unit standard is for people who have or seek responsibility for the management of risk at a top organisational level; and for managers who make, or contribute to making, risk management decisions, and who are required to commission or brief professional and technical experts in the field of risk management and to evaluate their recommendations or findings.

 

US2928 Establish quality standards and customer service strategies for marketing operations (Level 6, 7 credits)

This unit standard is for people who have, or seek responsibility for, or provide advice for, establishing quality and customer service standards for marketing activities. People credited with this unit standard are able to: define quality and customer service in relation to marketing activities; assess the influences of quality and customer service on marketing mix decisions; and establish quality standards and customer service strategies for marketing operations.

Additional Information

Enrolment: Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

 

Transfers:  All study selected for a particular intake must be completed within that intake period and cannot be carried over to another intake, unless a transfer is requested within the first two weeks after the start date.  Each transfer requested into an alternative intake will incur an admin fee of $50.  Transfers are not permitted two weeks after the intake start date or between academic years.

 

Withdrawals:  In order to get a refund of fees, students must advise SIT2LRN of their application withdrawal, in writing, 14 days prior to programme start date.  Students can withdraw up to 75% of the way through the course, but will still be liable for the fees. Students must advise SIT2LRN in writing of their programme withdrawal.

 

This programme requires a computer and internet access. All students are required to use their SIT webmail only. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system, for which access will be given during the period of study.  

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not completed this enrolment process or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fee Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Assessments

Each unit standard consists of several assignments which must be completed to be deemed competent in the unit standard.  There are set assignment due dates which students must meet.  Final assignments are usually due at the end of week 15 or 16 (to allow students time to re-sit if needed).

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $5.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

Career Opportunities

At the completion of this programme you will be able to gain employment in business related roles, or possibly continue with further study with our Postgraduate Diploma in Business Enterprise.

Application Criteria

All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in business management and have academic attributes which demonstrate that applicants have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme.  A minimum of 18 years of age, with a minimum of 4 years secondary education.  School leavers should have attained a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at level 2 in each of four subjects.  Open entry to applicants over 20 with appropriate experience and aptitude.  Admission may also be granted in special cases by relevant work experience and/or completion of National Diploma in Business Level 5.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed the programme and be eligible for the award of the qualification 'National Diploma in Business Level 6' they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved 120 credits as specified in the programme schedule.

 

The National Diploma will be awarded directly by NZQA on attainment of 120 credits as specified and upon verification of the graduate's NZQA official record of learning.
