Duration

Intakes are 18 weeks long.

  • Full time study = 70 credits in one intake; requiring approximately 40 hours study per week. 
  • Part time study may be completed over several intakes by selecting fewer modules per intake. It is recommended that students select alternate intakes  – ie select papers for intakes  #1 + #3   OR   #2 and #4 to avoid date overlaps.
  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake and cannot be carried over to another intake.

Course Outline

The National Certificate in Project Management (Level 4) recognises the skills and knowledge of a project team member. Level 4 is for applicants that are working for a project manager and want to progress to be a project manager.People awarded this qualification will have demonstrated that they have contributed to the management of projects, including the management of a straightforward project or a section of a larger project and working with others in a project team. This certificate is unable to be studied full time as the NZQA assessment requires students to submit evidence that they are working on a project either assisted by a project manager or on their own.

Course Content

US 25212 - Apply scope controls to a project

People credited with this unit standard are able to contribute to scope definition for a project and apply project scope controls to a project.

 

US 25213 - Apply time management techniques to a project

On completion of this unit students will be able to assist in the development of project schedules for a project, apply agreed schedules to a project using progress records and participate in assessing time management outcomes for a project.

 

US 25214 - Apply cost management techniques to a project

People credited with this unit standard are able to assist with the development of a project budget; monitor project costs and contribute to the cost finalisation process.

 

US 25215 - Apply quality management techniques to a project

On completion of this unit students will be able to contribute to quality planning, apply quality standards and contribute to continuous improvement for a project.

 

US 25216 - Apply human resource management approaches to a project

People credited with this unit standard are able to assist with determination of human resources requirements for a project; assist with human resource control and stakeholder management for a project; and contribute to conclusion and evaluation of human resource practices and stakeholder management for a project.

 

US 25217 - Apply risk management techniques to a project

On completion of this unit students are able to assist with risk analysis and risk management planning, conduct risk control activities and contribute to assessing risk management outcomes for projects.

 

US 25218 - Apply contract and procurement techniques to a project

People credited with this unit are able to assist with contract and procurement planning for a project; contribute to contractor selection process for a project; conduct contracting and procurement activities for a project and conduct finalisation activities for the contracting and procurement stages of a project.

 

US 25219 - Manage projects

Unit covers the management of a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. It focuses on the application of project management skills and the requirement of meeting timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project. Students will be able to define a project, develop a project plan, administer and monitor a project, finalise a project and review a project.

 

US 11101 - Collaborate within a group/team which has an objective(s)

Students will be able to collaborate within a group/team working toward achievement of objective(s) and contribute collaboratively to group/team function.

 

US 1987 - Develop strategies to establish and maintain positive workplace relationships

Individuals credited with this unit will be able to devise strategies to establish positive working relationships with colleagues and manager(s), develop strategies to maintain and monitor positive workplace relationships.

 

US 11649 - Manage and coordinate business meetings to achieve outcomes

Students will be able to establish meeting objectives, identify and inform participants, conduct meetings to achieve objectives and record and report meeting outcomes and determine follow-up actions.

 

US 1986 - Apply calculations, data analysis and statistical interpretation in a business context

At the completion of this unit students will be able to complete calculations for a business operation, compile, measure and analyse business data and present and interpret business statistics for the analysed data.

Additional Information

Enrolment: Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

  

Transfers:  All study selected for a particular intake must be completed within that intake period and cannot be carried over to another intake, unless a transfer is requested within the first two weeks after the start date.  Each transfer requested into an alternative intake will incur an admin fee of $50.  Transfers are not permitted two weeks after the intake start date or between academic years.

 

Withdrawals:  In order to get a refund of fees, students must advise SIT2LRN of their application withdrawal, in writing, 14 days prior to programme start date.  Students can withdraw up to 75% of the way through the course, but will still be liable for the fees. Students must advise SIT2LRN in writing of their programme withdrawal.

 

This programme requires a computer and internet access. All students are required to use their SIT webmail only. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system, for which access will be given during the period of study.

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not completed this enrolment process or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fee Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may wish to continue onto further study in the National Diploma in Project Management (Level 5).

Application Criteria

  • All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in project management and have academic attributes which indicate that they have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme
  • Applicants should be a minimum of 18 years of age, with a minimum of 4 years secondary education
  • School leavers should have attained a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at level 2 in each of 4 subjects.
  • Mature students are welcome to apply.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed the programme and be eligible for the award of the qualification National Certificate in Project Management (Level 4) they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved 70 credits as specified in the programme schedule.

 

The National Certificate will be awarded directly by NZQA on attainment of 70 credits as specified and upon verification of the graduate's NZQA official record of learning.
