  • 2012 #1 - 06/02/2012 to 01/06/2012  (Application to be received by SIT2LRN no later than 16 January 2012)

Duration

Intakes are 17 weeks long.

  • Full time study = 60 credits within one intake
  • Part time study may be completed over a period of up to 2 years by selecting alternate intakes  – ie select papers for intakes  #1 + #3  OR  #2 only in order to avoid date overlaps.
  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake and cannot be carried over to another intake.

Course Outline

This qualification recognises readiness for further study in computing and related fields at the national diploma level, as well as for employment using computers.  It recognises advanced skills for people who are using computers, and also provides an introductory qualification for those people who are interested in a career in computing or related fields.

 

This programme requires you to have a Computer and Internet Access.  All assignments are sent to the Facilitator via Email.

Course Content

US 25656 – Create a website using a mark-up language to meet a set brief. (Level 2) – 3 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to plan a website to meet the specifications of a brief; code the website using a mark-up language; and test and evaluate the website.

  

US 25657 – Create a website for a stakeholder using a mark-up language (Level 3) – 6 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to plan and design a website for a stakeholder;  create the website using mark-up language in accordance with the design specifications;  test and evaluate the website;  and complete end-user documentation.

 

Note: students must enrol in US 25656 and 25657 at the same time.

 

US 26229 - Create an interactive website for a stakeholder using client-side scripting (Level 4) – 10 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to plan and design an interactive website, develop a prototype and create an interactive website for a stakeholder using client side scripting, test and modify, operate and evaluate the website.

 

US 2787 – Create and use a computer database to provide a solution for organisation use (Level 3) – 6 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to plan, create and use a computer database to provide a solution for organization use, and create user documentation for the database.

  

US 18742 – Produce a relational database solution for organisational use (Level 4) – 8 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to design, create and operate, test and evaluate, a relational database to provide a solution for organisation use.

 

US 26228 – Evaluate and recommend with justification, the suitability of computer applications against user requirements (Level 4) – 4 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to review user requirements in order to develop evaluation criteria;  evaluate computer applications against developed criteria; and recommend, with justifications, the suitability of evaluated computer applications.

  

US 5948 – Use computer technology to research and present a topic (Level 4) – 3 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to use computer technology to plan and conduct research on a topic, and present the results of the research.

  

US 5952 – Demonstrate an understanding of information systems analysis (Level 4) – 3 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to describe information systems analysis, and analyse a small, simple information system.

 

US 6746 – Describe information systems departments in business organisations (Level 4) – 3 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to describe the roles and the typical structures of information systems departments in business organisations.

 

US 6852 – Describe data communications (Level 4) – 4 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to describe past, current and emerging developments in data communications, and describe synchronous and asynchronous data communication.

 

US 11622 – Demonstrate knowledge of the nature of accounting and prepare financial statements for an entity (Level 4) – 10 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to explain the nature of accounting and accounting concepts;  explain and classify transactions according to their effect on the expanded accounting equation;  and prepare financial statements for an entity.

  

US 1987 – Develop strategies to establish and maintain positive workplace relationships (Level 4) – 5 credits

People credited with this unit standard are able to devise strategies to establish positive working relationships with colleagues and managers(s); and develop strategies to maintain and monitor positive workplace relationships.

Additional Information

Enrolment: Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students. There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

  

Transfers:  All study selected for a particular intake must be completed within that intake period and cannot be carried over to another intake, unless a transfer is requested within the first two weeks after the start date.  Each transfer requested into an alternative intake will incur an admin fee of $50.  Transfers are not permitted two weeks after the intake start date or between academic years.

 

Withdrawals:  In order to get a refund of fees, students must advise SIT2LRN of their application withdrawal, in writing, 14 days prior to programme start date.  Students can withdraw up to 75% of the way through the course, but will still be liable for the fees. Students must advise SIT2LRN in writing of their programme withdrawal.

 

This programme requires a computer and internet access. All students are required to use their SIT webmail only. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system, for which access will be given during the period of study.

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not completed this enrolment process or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fee Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $5.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will have an in-depth knowledge of computer applications, and be able to apply computing, communication and basic finance skills, useful in a range of workplaces.  Graduates may continue with further study in SIT's Bachelor of Information Technology (upon meeting eligibility criteria).

Application Criteria

All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in increasing computing skills and have attributes which demonstrate that they have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme, and be able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in written format. School leavers should have attained a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at level 2 in each of four subjects. Mature students are welcome to apply.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme and be eligible for the awarding of the qualification National Certificate in Computing (Level 4), they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved a total of 65 credits as specified in the programme schedule.
