Duration

Intakes are 17 weeks long.

  • Full time study = 60 credits per intake; requiring approximately 40 hours study per week. 
  • It is recommended that students select alternate intakes  – ie select papers for intakes  #1 + #3   OR   #2 and #4 to avoid date overlaps.
  • Part time study may be completed over several intakes by selecting fewer modules per intake.
  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake and cannot be carried over to another intake.
  • Students should aim to complete the course in intake #3 if they wish to attend SIT's graduation ceremony.

Course Outline

The National Diploma in Adult Education and Training (Level 6) is designed for people responsible for management and leadership of adult education and training. People awarded this qualification have demonstrated expertise in the areas of assessment, delivery, design and development, evaluation, Maori education and training, and management of adult education and training. Holders of this qualification have a substantial depth of knowledge and skills in adult education and training, having met standards selected to suit personal, professional, and employment requirements through the elective sections of the qualification.

 

Ideally, this qualification builds on the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 5).

 

To complete aspects of this programme it is necessary to have:

  • access to adults to gain feedback from and to prepare and deliver learning sessions to; and
  • suitably qualified tutors to observe you assessing adults and to comment on and provide assessment material.

Course Content

US 10472: Demonstrate knowledge of support systems required for the provision of open, flexible and networked learning (OFNL)

People credited with this unit standard are able to examine relationships of participants in OFNL; demonstrate knowledge of how different media and related technologies support OFNL and demonstrate knowledge of learner support systems for OFNL. This unit standard is designed for teachers, tutors and trainers in the field on OFNL.

 

US 7097: Facilitate interactive learning sessions for adult learners

People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to facilitate and review interactive learning sessions for adult learners.

 

Note: US 7097 is best studied first, followed by US 7100.

 

US 7100: Manage learning events for adult education and training

At the completion of this unit students will be able to plan, organise and review learning events. This unit standard is relevant to staff within organisations for which the provision of adult education and training is the core business activity and to organisations where education and training support the core business activity.

 

US 11552: Design and evaluate assessment materials

Students who complete this unit are able to design and evaluate assessment materials.

 

US 25781: Facilitate learning in an open, flexible and networked  learning (OFNL) environment

People credited with this unit standard are able to develop plans to facilitate learning, facilitate learning and review facilitation of learning in an OFNL environment. This unit standard is designed for teachers, tutors and trainers in the field of OFNL.

 

US 25779: Develop materials for open, flexible and networked learning (OFNL)

At the completion of this unit students will be able to plan development of materials for OFNL, develop materials for OFNL and establish a plan to review OFNL materials. This unit standard is designed for developers and writers of OFNL materials.

 

US 11551: Moderate assessment

This unit standard is intended for use by experienced assessors who wish to extend their skills and knowledge of assessment. People credited with this unit are able to moderate assessment, verify assessment decisions and follow moderation administration requirements.

 

US 7094: Design a course for adult education and training

At the completion of this unit students are able to formulate course rationale for an adult education and training course, design and plan an adult education and training course, determine course content, plan course assessment, plan course evaluation and review designed course.

 

US 7104:  Conduct a training needs analysis for adults in an organisation

People credited with this unit standard are able to plan a training needs analysis for adults in an organisation, conduct the training needs analysis, develop and present training options and evaluate the training needs analysis process.

 

US 7098:  Evaluate an adult training course

This unit standard is for people who are required to evaluate the attributes of adult training courses. It is relevant to adult educators and trainers, course designers, course co-ordinators, staff developers, managers of adult education and training organisations, managers of client organisations, adult education and training consultants and professional associations. On completion students are able to plan an evaluation process for an adult training course, collect and analyse data on an adult training course and report on the results of the evaluation.

 

US 11280: Manage assessment within an organisation

People credited with this unit are able to plan and prepare for assessment, support assessors and manage quality assurance for assessment within an organisation.

 

US 9188: Demonstrate knowledge of approaches to research in education

At the completion of the unit students are able to critically appraise approaches to research, evaluate one approach to research in education, discuss a research methodology in education, critique the validity and relevance of research techniques in education and prepare a research proposal in education.

To successfully complete this unit you must have a thorough knowledge of academic writing requirements and the ability to research and reference material accurately.

 

US 9192: Demonstrate knowledge of ethics in research in education

People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the issues that come within the boundaries of ethics in research, identify and history of the field of ethics in research in New Zealand and demonstrate knowledge of the structures, policies and procedures within an educational organisation that support the monitoring of ethical conduct in research practice.

To successfully complete this unit you must have a thorough knowledge of academic writing requirements and the ability to research and reference material accurately.

Additional Information

Enrolment: Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

  

Transfers:  All study selected for a particular intake must be completed within that intake period and cannot be carried over to another intake, unless a transfer is requested within the first two weeks after the start date.  Each transfer requested into an alternative intake will incur an admin fee of $50.  Transfers are not permitted two weeks after the intake start date or between academic years.

 

Withdrawals:  In order to get a refund of fees, students must advise SIT2LRN of their application withdrawal, in writing, 14 days prior to programme start date.  Students can withdraw up to 75% of the way through the course, but will still be liable for the fees. Students must advise SIT2LRN in writing of their programme withdrawal.

 

This programme requires a computer and internet access. All students are required to use their SIT webmail only. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system, for which access will be given during the period of study.

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not completed this enrolment process or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fee Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $5.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

Graduates will have demonstrated expertise in the areas of assessment, delivery, design and development, evaluation, Maori education and training, and management of adult education and training.  They will have a substantial depth of knowledge and skills in adult education and training, having met standards selected to suit personal, professional, and employment requirements.

Application Criteria

This course is suitable for people tutoring in tertiary institutes or people who have training responsibility in workplaces.  It is recommended that students applying for the National Diploma in Adult Education and Training (Level 6) have completed the National Certificate in Adult Education and Training (Level 5).

 

Applicants should have:

  • A qualification and/or equivalent work experience in a vocation that they would like to teach.
  • Evidence that satisfies the teaching institution that they are capable of studying at this level and have a reasonable chance of successfully completing each unit standard attempted.
  • Access to adults to teach
  • Current or recent knowledge of tertiary institute, or workplace, organisational procedures.

 

International Students

In addition to the above criteria, students for whom English is a second language must have an IELTS score of 6.0 (academic) with no individual band lower than 5.5 of TOEFL score of 550.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme and be eligible for the awarding of the qualification National Diploma in Adult Education and Training (Level 6) they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved a total of 120 credits as specified in the programme schedule.

 

 

The National Diploma in Adult Education and Training (Level 6) will be awarded by NZQA on attainment of 120 credits as specified and upon verification of the graduate’s NZQA official record of learning.
