Duration

Intakes are 14 weeks long.

  • Full time study = 45 credits within one intake (approximately 40 hours study per week)
  • Part time study may be completed over a period of up to 2 years by selecting alternate intakes  – ie select papers for intakes  #1 + #3 + #5   OR   #2 and #4 to avoid date overlaps.
  • As a guideline, one credit equates to approximately 10 hours study within an intake period
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake and cannot be carried over to another intake.

Course Outline

The programme will allow students to gain skills and knowledge that are directly relevant to working or further training in the management sector, demonstrate knowledge and skills to standards recognised by the management sector as appropriate, and develop work habits and practice appropriate for further training and employment in the management sector. The flexible structure of the qualification enables individuals and organisations to select outcomes that meet the diverse roles and context required by a wide range of industries.

US11649 – Manage and coordinate business meetings to achieve outcomes (Level 5, 5 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: establish meeting objectives; identify and inform participants; conduct meetings to achieve objectives; and record and report meeting outcomes, and determine follow-up actions.

  • Assessment must take place in the workplace

 

US16342 – Identify key workplace organisational principles (Level 4, 4 credits)

People credited with this unit are able to: explain the relationship between organisational design and achievement of organisational goals; describe alternative organisational structures; describe management levels within organisations; and explain the impact of environmental factors on the management of organisations.

  • Assessment can take place in workplace or simulated conditions

 

US16612 – Use effective business writing skills in a business organisation (Level 4, 4 credits)

People credited with this standard are able to: apply rules of contemporary punctuation, grammar, syntax, and style to achieve effective business writing; apply writing style and methods to achieve effective communication for a business purpose; and monitor the effectiveness of business writing.

People credited with this standard are able to evaluate current use of time and plan for improvements, and apply techniques and measures to improve use of time in business situations.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: explain concepts, systems, and principles of quality and quality assurance; identify the quality assurance requirements for a business operation; and assess the quality assurance system of a business operation.

US1983 – Analyse work content and identify work team needs (Level 4, 5 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: analyse work content and identify competencies to meet work demands; use job analysis information to define workplace requirements for work demands; and produce criteria for selection to the work team.

US1986 – Apply calculations, data analysis, and statistical interpretation in a business context (Level 4, 5 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: complete calculations for a business operation; compile, measure, and analyse business data; and present and interpret business statistics for the analysed data.

US1987 – Develop strategies to establish and maintain positive workplace relationships (Level 4, 5 credits)

People credited with this unit standard are able to: devise strategies to establish positive working relationships with colleagues and manager(s); and develop strategies to maintain and monitor positive workplace relationships.

US23396 – Demonstrate knowledge of performance management planning (Level 4, 3 credits)

People credited with this standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the role of performance management in an organisation; and develop a performance management plan.

Enrolment: Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

 

Transfers:  All study selected for a particular intake must be completed within that intake period and cannot be carried over to another intake, unless a transfer is requested within the first two weeks after the start date.  Each transfer requested into an alternative intake will incur an admin fee of $50.  Transfers are not permitted two weeks after the intake start date or between academic years.

 

Withdrawals:  In order to get a refund of fees, students must advise SIT2LRN of their application withdrawal, in writing, 14 days prior to programme start date.  Students can withdraw up to 75% of the way through the course, but will still be liable for the fees. Students must advise SIT2LRN in writing of their programme withdrawal.

 

This programme requires a computer and internet access. All students are required to use their SIT webmail only. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system, for which access will be given during the period of study.  

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not completed this enrolment process or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fee Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Assessments

Assessments:  This certificate is aimed at current employees in the workforce or people who want/need training in first line management. Some assessment must take place in a workplace as detailed above.  

This programme contains specific assignment due dates.  These are listed online on the student Blackboard.  There are 2 different assessment due date schedules – one for Part Time and one for Full Time study.  Each intake is of 14 weeks duration, with final assignment/s usually due at the end of week 12 or 13 (to allow students time to re-sit if needed). 

Fees

The Zero Fees Scheme applies to this course, so there are no tuition fees as long as you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident (residing in NZ), BUT there is a student direct material cost of $5.50 per credit of study undertaken, plus the required textbook/s listed below.  You must maintain satisfactory academic progress to retain your Zero Fees Scheme entitlement.

There are no required textbooks that need to be purchased for this course.

Career Opportunities

For people seeking positions as team leaders, supervisors, charge hands, or first line managers.  Holders of this qualification may be responsible for managing people, resources and/or projects, or continue on to further study in our National Certificate in Small Business Management or National Diploma in Business (Level 5).

Application Criteria

Admission may be granted to those aged 20 or over at the time of the programme commencement. 

 

Applicants under 20 years of age at programme commencement should have attained 12 credits or more at NCEA Level 2 in each of four topics.  Students who have done some work at NCEA Level 3 are also encouraged to apply for the programme.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed this programme, and be eligible for award of the qualification National Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all unit standards, and achieved a total of 45 credits as specified in the programme schedule.

 

The National Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) will be awarded directly by NZQA on attainment of 45 credits as specified and upon verification of the graduate's NZQA official record of learning.
