Duration

Intakes are 17 weeks long.

  • Part time study is preferable, due to the intensive workload. Full time study may be applied for.
  • Part time study may be completed over a period of up to 2 years by selecting alternate intakes  – ie select papers for intakes  #1 + #3   OR   #2 and #4 to avoid date overlaps.
  • Full time study = 60 credits within one intake
  • All papers selected within a particular intake must be completed within that intake and cannot be carried over to another intake.

Course Outline

This programme aims to equip graduates with the ability to undertake interior design work to satisfy their personal needs, and/or plan careers or enter into further study in areas which specialise in interior design.

CID101 Design Fundamentals

Design Fundamentals is an introduction to the basic concepts of design and the design process.  Colour and the historical features of buildings are also explored.

  • Design Fundamentals - 3 credits

  • The dimensions of colour and light - 12 credits
  • Historical Practice - 12 credits
  • Identify and discuss basic elements and principles of design.
  • Compose a theoretical statement detailing evidence and relationships of the elements and principles of design.
  • Present a concept or idea in a 2-dimensional presentation.

 

CID102 Science of Textiles       

In this module, students develop their knowledge of textiles and apply this to selecting furnishings.  Students also investigate kitchen design and storage solutions.

  • Textile knowledge and selection of furnishings - 7 credits
  • Kitchen design and storage solutions - 8 credits
  • Describe and appraise a range of textiles, on the basis of their performance properties, specifications and function, with reference to the design elements in a decorating situation.
  • Complete a decorating project which will require client analysis, concept development and selection of textiles and colour schemes.
  • Present a colour board of a kitchen concept, with reference to storage principles and applying the principles of good kitchen layouts with functional values.

Design fundamental experience is required from past or current study.

 

CID103 Presentation

This Presentation module includes different presentation techniques, colour rendering techniques, floor plans, elevations and perspective drawings as well as space planning and 3D model construction.

CID104 Design Project             

Students further develop and apply their design skills to a comprehensive project.

  • Product Design - 15 credits
  • Professional Practice - 15 credits
  • Distinguish furniture styles and their influences
  • Incorporate furniture and utilise accessories or art works in a decorating brief
  • Apply budgeting skills; understand issues of project work and consultation with respect to workplace safety and ethical behaviour.
  • Devise a budget and decorating solutions to problems. Organise a major decorative layout.

 

CID105 Business Skills            

This unit focuses predominantly on setting up your own business, giving you skills to search out and apply some of the practical, legal, financial, organisational, and ethical health and safety aspects of working as an interior decorator.  (All other modules must be completed prior to, or at the same time as, studying CID105).

Additional Information

Materials: One art kit is supplied per student upon enrolment in CID101.  Additional materials are the students' responsibility.  If a student does not achieve competency in CID101 and they re-apply for CID101 they do not receive another art kit.  If a student withdraws from CID101 they are required to either return the art kit or alternatively they are invoiced $150.00 for this kit. 

 

Postage: Assignments are to be posted at students' expense to Tokoroa post box - details given once application is accepted.

 

Enrolment: Application forms are filled out on a year by year basis and students are welcome to apply for multiple intakes on the one application form.  Further enrolment is the responsibility of individual students.  There is no automatic enrolment rollover.

  

Transfers:  All study selected for a particular intake must be completed within that intake period and cannot be carried over to another intake, unless a transfer is requested within the first two weeks after the start date.  Each transfer requested into an alternative intake will incur an admin fee of $50.  Transfers are not permitted two weeks after the intake start date or between academic years.

 

Withdrawals:  In order to get a refund of fees, students must advise SIT2LRN of their application withdrawal, in writing, 14 days prior to programme start date.  Students can withdraw up to 75% of the way through the course, but will still be liable for the fees. Students must advise SIT2LRN in writing of their programme withdrawal.

 

This programme requires a computer and internet access. All students are required to use their SIT webmail only. All course materials and information, including assessments and due dates, are located on the online Blackboard system, for which access will be given during the period of study.

 

Facilitator Assistance:  During the enrolled intake period, students have email access to Facilitators, who endeavour to respond to emails within 48 hours (week days only).  All students are required, within the first two weeks of intake, to send an email to their Facilitator confirming their start on the programme of study.  Students who have not completed this enrolment process or embarked upon their course of study by the end of the 2nd week of intake, will be Faculty Withdrawn from the programme.  Such withdrawals may impact on future access to SIT Zero Fee Scheme and Student Direct Material Costs are still liable for payment.

Textbooks

There are no required textbooks that need to be purchased for this course.

Career Opportunities

At the successful completion of this programme, students will have the required competencies to function successfully and effectively at operational levels within the interior design sector.  Graduates could go on to employment in sales, merchandising, customer service or self employment.

Application Criteria

All applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in interior design and academic attributes which demonstrate that applicants have a reasonable likelihood of successful completion of the programme.

Satisfactory Completion

For students to be considered to have satisfactorily completed the qualification of Certificate in Interior Décor they must have completed all scheduled course work requirements and assessments, successfully completed assessment requirements for all modules, and achieved a total of 120 credits as specified in the programme schedule.
